Introduction
This project was designed to provide students and staff with the opportunity to experience first hand, a range of communication methods. For the majority of participants, their experience with the radio station will be their only first hand investigation into the range of communication options available. It is one thing to read about different modes of communication, it is totally different to experience it first hand.
Our School
East Hills Girls Technology High School is a comprehensive technology high school located in South Western Sydney. The School has approximately 960 students drawn from both the local area and surrounding districts.
The school maintains a broad curriculum with a strong emphasis on technology. All students in years 9 & 10 undertake Information and Software Technology as a mandatory subject in their selection of courses. A large proportion of students undertake further studies in technology related subjects as part of their senior studies.
Project Philosophy
The project was designed to provide students with an environment that enables them to learn about communications technologies through the practical application of their skills. The radio station provides an environment where students can take responsibility and risks in their learning and tailor the learning experience to suit their individual needs.
Sustainability
One of the requirements of the project is to develop sustainable solutions. In the case of the school radio station, a program has begun with year seven students to develop their expertise as station operators. Every effort will be made to ensure that this knowledge to be passed down from one group of students to the next. The equipment used in the project is commercial grade with a long life expectancy.
